Veggie Pals and Discover With Me!

Using the mission of Veggie Pals and my experience as an early child educator, I created an early childhood show for Veggie Pals. The title of the show, "Discover Healthy Habits with Veggie Pals!"

I have three loves: working with young children, singing and dancing!  I'm currently the "star" of the show and I get the chance to sing, dance and  "discover" healthy habits with 3 - 6 year olds.

Dr. Seuss Story Time with Music, Movement, Rhythm, & Rhyme!

In honor of Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Read Across America, I led a story time at my girls' school!

The children and I "rapped" the story Hop on Pop.  The use of music, movement and rhythm help children make a connection to the story, new vocabulary words and practice the phonological awareness skill of rhyming.

Discovering the texture of dirt with our sense of touch!
Discover our sense of touch!
We discovered our sense of touch by identifying our hands and fingers with a song.  We also identified the meaning of soft, hard and rough by exploring sensory centers with our parent/caregiver.  We crawled through a soft tunnel and slid down a hard slide!  We also explored our sense of touch by manipulating sand paper, cotton balls, ice, sand, and dirt!  We made soft scarves dance on a parachute and then we caught slippery and wet bubbles.  We closed with handprint art as we painted our hands and put handprints on our Discover With Me! t-shirt!

Manipulating big blocks to construct a zoo for the animals!
Theme:  Discovering Zoo Animals with Our Sense of Sight and Sound!

At this week's DWM! we played, listened to a story, climbed up the "mountain" slide then slid down, crawled through a "bear" tunnel then under a waterfall, and learned ASL (American Sign Language) for the words panda, more, and again.  We also sang songs to develop phonemic awareness, practiced paying attention skills by listening and responding to the words slow, stop, fast, up and down while making a monkey "jump on the bed" during parachute time.  We also caught bubbles as they floated "down like leaves" from the trees that giraffes eat from.  While listening to the big book story Panda Bear, Panda Bear What Do You See? by Eric Carle, we discovered endangered animals and our sense of sight!  Caregivers and babies/toddlers discovered how to make binoculars with recycled items from home....lots of discovery learning!

Discover With Me! + North Channel Public Library + The Veggie Pals + The Houston Children's Museum's Para Los Ninos = LOTS OF LITERACY FUN!

Here are some pictures of Discover With Me! supporting the North Channel Library's program Para Los Ninos. We had fun discovering the topic Healthy Mind/Healthy Body!  We read The Carrot Seed aloud and then the toddlers acted it out with props in Spanish.  We then "dug" up real carrots from the dirt!  Dolly the Banana, a healthy fruit, visited us (courtesy of Veggie Pals). The toddlers learned how to use their sense of touch, sight and smell to identify fruits.  We also exercised our body by "reaching up for apples and bananas from the tallest branches."  The children identified their favorite fruits and discriminated between long and short carrots as they made a "healthy drink" with a juicer machine. The kids picked the veggies and fruits of their choice, placed them in the juicer, turned it on and watched the juice pour out in their cup - the exiciting part was watching them drink it and LIKING IT!

Discover With Me! Playgroup:  "Planting a Rainbow"

Picture
So far we've met about 8 times.  Each session has had it's on theme!  Last Friday's theme was based on the story "Planting a Rainbow."  We discovered the primary colors red, blue, yellow; the ASL signs for the words red, blue, yellow, & flower; we planted and watered seeds; we raked dirt in the sandbox; crawled through a "flower tunnel," discovered how to make tissue paper flowers with recycled materials such as used gift tissue paper and empty paper towel rolls; their was tummy time on a mat decorated with flowers and butterflies for the babies; we also discovered how to turn our painted handprints into "flowers," we played with (and identified) real vs fake flowers, we tossed a flower in the air with the parachute while singing ring around the rosies; we sang "the flowers on the bus go round and round" as we gave the children a "ride" on the parachute; we closed with catching "floating flowers" (bubbles)!  Until next time!

Playgroup: Discovering Our 5 Senses

May 2010:  During this playgroup we "discovered" our 5 senses with the story The 5 Senses by Aliki!  Marcie Chapa, world renowned percussionist, joined me by drumming along while I read the story aloud.  Marcie has performed around the world and has recorded and toured with Beyonce.  She gives back to her community by sharing her talent-inspiring young children and young adults to reach their goals. Ms. Marcie and I met when we were members of a local "rock" band where she played the timbales and I was a back-up singer!
